Our Answer: The Whiskey Sour

We’ve found most hosts or home bar aficionados purchase high quality ingredients and use simple cocktail recipes to get the best results. At Snake Oil Cocktail Company, we are always testing new ingredients and new fusions that taste great and fit within our brand. One of our favorite classic drinks is a traditional Whiskey Sour, made with bourbon, lemon, simple syrup and egg white. It’s simple, classic and versatile, if you are looking to experiment with different flavors and make it your own.

It’s understandable why most home bar aficionados steer away from egg white in a cocktail. It may not sound appealing at first, but once you feel comfortable using egg white in your cocktails, you’ll wonder why you ever questioned it. Raw egg whites have been used in cocktails for almost a century, adding a creamy froth to the cocktail. The egg white does not add much flavor, if any, and contributes more to the texture of the cocktail.

Choose a bourbon: Perhaps you want to make a twist on the classic and choose High West Campfire, which is a smokey blend of scotch, whiskey and rye, or a try a cask finished bourbon. However, any ole bourbon will do!

Lemon Juice: Juice or squeeze your own lemons for the freshest tasting cocktail. Be sure to strain the lemon juice to remove all the seeds and pulp.

Simple Syrup: Our go-to ratio is 1 to 1. Pour equal parts water and sugar into a sauce pan and turn on medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let it cool. Here is another opportunity to make this classic cocktail your own. Option to infuse your simple syrup with fresh herbs, citrus peels, edible flowers, spices or fruits. Add the infusion while the simple syrup is hot and remove it once it cools.

Egg White: Last but not least, the shining star of the cocktail: the egg white. The egg white will lend a silky smooth texture to your Whiskey Sour and a foam head on the cocktail.

Whiskey Sour Recipe

1.5 oz. bourbon

.75 oz. lemon

1 oz. simple syrup

1 egg white

  1. Dry shake the egg white. Crack one egg and separate the yolk from the egg white. Discard the yolk. Put the egg white into your cocktail shaker (no ice) and shake vigorously to aerate the egg. This will give you a headstart on creating that foamy, meringue like froth without watering down the cocktail with ice.
  2. Add: bourbon, lemon, simple syrup and ice to the shaker. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 10 seconds.
  3. Strain a coupe glass.
  4. Garnish with brandied cherry. We love creating various designs with bitters, edible flowers and herbs or a custom Snake Oil Cocktail Graffiti design.

Cheers!
